Home Improvement Strategies to Save Money

Home improvement or repairs can be very expensive. Complaints are common both during the work and after the work is complete. Living through major projects is always stressful. Cost overruns or other money related problems can only make the stress worse. Following these guidelines will help you save money on home repairs and improvement. Home Improvement Strategies to Save Money #1: Make sure to get multiple bids from well established, recommended, licensed contractors. Get detailed, written, fixed-price bids for the work. Never agree to a home improvement or repair contract that requires full payment before satisfactory completion of all the work. Hold off on making complete payment until you are totally satisfied. See item #5. Home Improvement Strategies to Save Money #2: Are there any nagging projects around the home that are beyond your skill level and time availability, yet too small for a contractor? Try a handyman service. They often fill the gap where a job is too small for a contractor. Often, contractors will bid a very high price for a job they really don’t want to take or they feel it is too small for them. A handyman service is the perfect solution. Home Improvement Strategies to Save Money #3:Do what builders and moving companies do when they have big jobs- they hire extra manual laborers. This can be done economically. Use a temporary labor service. You can get a lot of the “heavy lifting" or hard manual labor jobs done by using temporary laborers from a service. If you began a home improvement job and it became more than you anticipated, you can call and have additional people brought in to help. You can choose when the workers will start and finish and how many people will be there. As a bonus, they will usually be driven to your home. We recently had help moving and landscaping a new home using these services. The job was too large and difficult for me to handle alone. With the laborers, we were able to get a lot done in a short period for much less than if we had hired a moving company and landscaping company. Tip- make sure there are no language issues. Usually one person on the crew that speaks the same languages you and the other workers will suffice. You can also specify workers with experience in the area (type of job) you need them for. Often, they have been more experienced than me and had good suggestions and techniques how to do the job. We tell the workers at the beginning of the day that we will feed them a nice lunch. We always have plenty of cold drinks available and made sure they knew they may use our bathroom. We also tell them if they do a good job and take god care of our property, we will tip them at the end of the day. This extra gesture has been greatly appreciated and has noticeably motivated motivated the workers. Create an atmosphere where they feel acknowledged and valued as people. Not only is this the right thing to do, but it is often neglected by many of the people they work for. As a result, they will work better for you. Home Improvement Strategies to Save Money #4:Whenever you hire anyone to work for you, first make sure that they have proper insurance coverage. You don’t want to be held liable to any injuries or medical problems that occur on your property. You won’t be saving any money if you have to pay for medical and workman’s compensation bills. Home Improvement Strategies to Save Money #5: Always thoroughly inspect the work before you pay the final installment. This is your best chance to get any deficiencies or discrepancies corrected. Otherwise, once you have paid in full, it is very unlikely any problems will be fixed without it costing you money, time and aggravation. Home Improvement Strategies to Save Money #6: When considering doing a project yourself or hiring it out, consider the time value of your efforts. Determine a dollar amount that your time is worth to you. Then realistically factor that in when you consider doing things yourself vs. hiring them out. In addition, consider whether you should use the time gained by hiring out the to task to earn more money. In the time it would take to complete the task, if you could earn more money than it you would save by doing the task yourself, then it is a better value for you to earn the money and use it to hire out the task. If you have a home business or your compensation is based on specific results, it’s likely that you can generate more income by taking that time you'd spend cleaning or maintaining you home or yard and putting it into your business. Bottom line... hire out as much manual work as you can afford and invest the time in your business, family or recreation
