• Try to avoid picking up your rental car at the airport. The major cities (for example, Denver) really gouge the out of town people with high daily fees and taxes for renting a car at the airport. If your car rental is for several days, these fees can really add up.

• At off-airport rental agencies, you will find rates that are more competitive, avoid extra surcharges and taxes. This difference can be over 20%. One way to do that is if you will be staying at a hotel that has airport transportation, check to see if you can rent a car neat the hotel. For example, you might be able to catch a courtesy van to your hotel and then rent a car near there for much less per day than renting from the airport location.

• Always reserve the smallest rental car practical for your use. Not only will it cost less to rent, and be easier to park, you will save on gas expenses. • Because rental car rates can vary greatly, make sure you are comparing the total price (including taxes and surcharge). The initial rate quoted or the ads often do not include taxes and fees. These can be as much as $100 or more. It is annoying to arrive at the car rental counter only to find out that the great rental car discount you thought you booked is artificially low.

• The rental car companies have different fuel, insurance and waiver options. Before you drive a rental car, check with your Credit Card Company and automobile insurance company to avoid duplicating any coverage.

• See if you can use a special offers or membership rental car discount. (i.e. AAA, AARP, your insurance company or employer)

• If you are visiting a large city, you might be able to get by using public transportation instead a rental car.

  Many European cities have tourist cards that give you unlimited public transportation for a specific number of days. Not only is it a great way to experience the culture, you can see many things for a minimal cost.

• Pump you own gas. If you fill the rental car up yourself before returning it, you will always save money.

• If you require any special equipment such as a car seat or a bike or ski rack, use the car rental company’s web site or national reservations center. Be aware that prices vary greatly among rental companies.

  We have found that it is worth bringing you own car seat rather than renting one. You can check you seat on the flight- just put it in a large garbage bag and tape it shut. This can save you $6- 10 per day.

  If you need a ski rack, often it is less expensive to rent a larger car that you can fit the skis inside than paying a daily rack rental.

• Join the frequent user clubs at a few rental car companies. You will find quicker, more efficient reservations and checkout. At airports where you will ride the specific rental company bus to the remote lot, they will drop you off directly at your car and you will not have to go and wait at the counter. In addition, they often have additional car rental discounts or upgrades for their loyal customers.

• Try reserving you rental car as soon as you know that you will be making a trip. Even if you‘re booking for the prime season, if you book it during the low season, you often can get a rental car discount.
